PRETOMA is a Costa Rican non-profit NGO founded in 1997. We are a marine conservation and research organization working to protect ocean resources and promote sustainable fisheries policies in Costa Rica and Central America.

Pretoma's marine conservation and research program focuses on the biological study of the abundance of green turtles and hawksbill turtles in Costa Rica's Northwestern Pacific coast, and how they make of the coastal habitats.

In a collabrative effort, Casa Tortuga, the BBC Wildlife Fund, and World Society for the Protection of Animals have provided PRETOMA with a boat, a 50 HP outboard engine, and a 20 HP outboard engine.

The boat will also be used to support PRETOMA's participation in ĄCarey! The eastern Pacific hawksbill initiative. This regional project brings together a group of over 20 biologists with expertise on eastern Pacific sea turtles, to gather information on hawksbill sea turtle populations, including nesting sites, aggregation sites, foraging grounds, and migratory routes. This critical endangered hawksbill population is only a vestige of a once numerous population. Research regarding the status and population of a newly identified nesting beach in El Salvador in 2008, as well conservation needs to protect the beach, is a main priority of the project.
