The Tour de Turtles takes the STC's already successful online tracking program in an exciting new direction and is a huge initiative for sea turtle conservation. The three month long event tracking individual sea turtles leaving their respective nesting beaches as they swam to complete the equivalent of a marathon.

Each turtle swims to raise awareness about a particular cause or threat to marine turtles. Major threats include turtles caught by fisherman, eggs eaten by dogs, using turtles for jewelry and lotion, climate change, artificial light pollution, inappropriate coastal development, plastics, and human consumption.

Casa Tortuga has sponsored a leatherback sea turtle each year since the start of the Tour de Turtle in 2008. Leatherbacks are the most endangered turtle species. Millana represented the threat of predation of turtle nests by uncontrolled dogs. Read more about Chiriquí Beach Panama.

More than 15,000 teachers, representing nearly 525,000 students have signed up to participate in the Sea Turtle Migration-Tracking Program. Since 2004, STC's website visitation has doubled, helping Casa Tortuga and others to educate people about Sea Turtles and threats to their existence.
