Marine Turtle Conservation Program Yayasan Pulau Banyak was started in 1994 when Mahmud Bangkaru visited the Pulau Bangkaru region and motivated the local community to start conservation activities. YPB promotes local participation in enhancing conservation efforts through community capacity building and socio-economic development in order to manage the natural resources of Pulau Banyak. The program came to a halt in 2001 because of civil war in the Aceh region, but was restarted in 2006 by Mahmud Bangkaru and Dr. Maggie Muurmans, a Dutch sea turtle expert. Dr. Muurmans is interested in the nesting populations of Pulau Bangkaru.
After YPB appealed to the sea turtle list serve, seaturtle.org, Casa Tortuga responded to their appeal and started talking with YPB about how they could help support their turtle monitoring programs. In November 2007, patrol teams were trained for research work, and in February 2008, the first sea turtles in Sumatra were tagged to monitor nesting populations.
Casa Tortuga donated beach patrol equipment, boat monitors and turtle tagging equipment. With these donations, YPB will collect significant information on the green turtle population. Partnering between Casa Tortuga and YPB is helping the conservation of green, leatherback and hawksbill turtles through beach patrols and through community development programs.

Casa Tortuga help provide the first 1,000 turtle flipper id tags. Watch a video on the recent work of Yayasan Pulau Banyak in the Pulau Banyak archipela. The clip shows one of the flipper tags being applied.
Casa Tortuga also provided the group with boat equipment, which can be seen in this video clip.
Make a donation to help Yayasan Pulau Banyak through Casa Tortuga's Boats for Biologists Project!
